That a young Italian singing waiter from Queens could find common ground with a country singer from Alabama's backwoods is testament both to Williams' skills as a writer and to Bennett's imagination and artist's ear. Allmusic writer Bill Janovitz discusses this unlikely combination: The popularity of Bennett's version has been credited with helping to expose both Williams and country music to a wider national audience. It first reached the Billboard magazine charts on July 20, 1951, and lasted 27 weeks on the chart, peaking at number 1. ![]() This recording was released by Columbia Records as catalog number 39449. That same year, it was recorded in a pop version by Tony Bennett with a light orchestral arrangement from Percy Faith. Lynn Nickell have each written that 21-year-old Kentuckian Paul Gilley wrote the lyrics, then sold them to Williams along with the rights, allowing Williams to take credit for it. Music journalist Chet Flippo and Kentucky historian W. In the liner notes to the 1990 Polygram compilation Hank Williams: The Original Single Collection, Fred Rose's son Wesley states, "Hank earned two major distinctions as a songwriter: he was the first writer on a regular basis to make country music national music and he was the first country songwriter accepted by pop artists, and pop A&R men." The song would become a pop hit for Tony Bennett, paving the way for country songs to make inroads into the lucrative pop market. Although a notorious binge drinker, Williams appears remarkably at ease on front of the cameras, with one critic noting, "He stared at the camera during his performance of 'Cold, Cold Heart' with a cockiness and self-confidence that bordered on arrogance." Williams featured the song on his Mother's Best radio shows at the time of its release and performed the song on The Kate Smith Evening Hour on April 23, 1952, which ran from September 1951 to June 1952 the appearance remains one of the few existing film clips of the singer performing live. "Dear John" peaked at #8 after only a brief four-week run on Billboard magazine's country music charts, but "Cold, Cold Heart" proved to be a favorite of disc jockeys and jukebox listeners, whose enthusiasm for the song catapulted it to #1 on the country music charts. Like his earlier masterpiece " I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," it was released as the B-side (MGM-10904B) to "Dear John" (MGM-10904A), since it was an unwritten rule in the country music industry that the faster numbers sold best. ![]() The first draft of the song is dated November 23, 1950, and was recorded with an unknown band on December 21, 1950. 'You sorry son of a bitch,' she is supposed to have said, 'it was you that caused me to suffer like this.' Hank went home and told the children's governess, Miss Ragland, that Audrey had a 'cold, cold heart,' and then, as so often in the past, realized the bitterness in his heart held commercial promise. Florida bandleader Pappy Neil McCormick claims to have witnessed the encounter:Īccording to McCormick, Hank went to the hospital and bent down to kiss Audrey, but she wouldn't let him. ![]() Escott also speculates that Audrey, who carried on extramarital affairs as Hank did on the road, may have suspected the baby was not her husband's. In the Williams episode of American Masters, country music historian Colin Escott states that Williams was moved to write the song after visiting his wife Audrey in the hospital, who was suffering from an infection brought on by an abortion she had carried out at their home unbeknownst to Hank. Target type refers to the data type that you are casting an expression to. You can use the CONVERT () function to display date / time data in a variety of formats.ĬONVERT differs in that it accepts optional style parameters used for formatting. For such things, conversion functions are used. In many cases, to convert an expression from one type to another, you need to convert the data from a datetime type to a varchar type in a stored procedure or other routine. Take, for example, the Military Camps building. These bonuses stack to become incredibly powerful. Various building in your Domain grant Realm-wide bonuses to a particular type of unit. Instead, they actively counter Heavy Infantry and Heavy Cavalry, meaning that you would need Light Cavalry to counter these and still require regular Bowmen to counter Skirmishers.Īs we talked about above, as Innovations progress, Men-at-Arms see improvements to their logistics, but you are also able to improve their combat performance in other ways. Note: Crossbowmen, despite being considered Archers by the game mechanics, are not the replacement for Bowmen. The below list shows what each is strong against, with it looping back to the top at the end: This can reduce combat capability by as much as 90% with enough of a counter so it's important to study your enemies and make sure you aren't wasting your resources.Īs you could predict, archers are good against Skirmishers, but weak against Cavalry units. Each type of Regiment has a strength and a weakness to another. The next thing to consider is the rock-paper-scissors of how they fight against opposing Men-at-Arms. That said, considering the ratio of the number between these elite troops and your Levies, your Levies will almost always be the most expensive forces to maintain during war, being up to an order of magnitude more expensive. While this is fairly low while they remain unraised, once you bring them onto the field, they can quickly add up to a much higher price. One thing to consider when building up your Men-at-Arms aside from the initial cost of each tier is the upkeep. You will also unlock the ability to have more Regiments in total and gain access to new unit types. As Innovations progress, more tiers becomes available allowing for larger units to be maintained. When you hire them they begin with only 5 men and slowly reinforce to full strength.Įach unit, once hired, can be upgraded through multiple tiers, each adding an extra hundred soldiers. This is not the same as the number of men in the units though. You begin with a Regiment Limit which is how many different units you can hire. If you were familiar with Retinues from CK2, they are more or less the same idea, with noticeable refinements. Your Men-at-Arms will arrive immediately, but the rest of your army could take several days to appear so be patient and wait before starting to manage them. You are able to reorganise stacks, moving troops and Knights into new armies and so it is often a good idea to simply raise all in one place to make sure you don't have straggler stacks getting picked off across the map, before organising them manually. It's worth noting here that you cannot declare war with armies already raised. This means that no matter where you raise your first army of war, it will include your elite troops. If you choose local only, you will generate a stack of nearby Levies (the number can be seen to the side of the button) along with your Men-at-Arms. Each new Rally Point creates a different coloured flag on the map and if you click on this you see the option to either Raise Local Army or Raise All Here. At the bottom of the Military tab, you can click to add and then select a Holding anywhere inside your Realm. To raise armies in CK3 you need to first make a Rally Point. ![]() ![]() There's a lot to learn so let's get to it. The Vetruvian faction builds structures that create temporary units at the start of each turn. Duelyst goes down a quieter, more cerebral path, and it works, just at the cost of exciting stories to tell my friends. It’s strange complaining about a lack of RNG given how often Hearthstone’s community whines about its prevalence, but after playing Duelyst I can understand why Blizzard chose the path it did: big, turns. There’s nothing like in Duelyst which, depending on who you talk to, could be a good thing or a bad thing. The cards are creative and unique, but also relatively straightforward. It’s not that every match plays out the same-far from it, as the decision-tree for any given match can branch wildly outward-but that there isn’t much opportunity for big unexpected plays. Short match times (8-10 minutes) and more consistent draws mean there’s little room for surprise. ![]() Still, despite that extra level of depth, I found myself occasionally missing the big “wow” moments I’ve come to expect from tense matches in games like Hearthstone or League of Legends. Falling behind on the board can be hard to come back from if you get surrounded, and the replace mechanic lets you draw into answers faster. This allows decks to be significantly more consistent, which is important to making Duelyst feel like a tactics game in addition to a card game. Once a turn, you can mulligan a card from your hand to draw a different one. Another great change from the CCG formula is Duelyst’s 'Replace' mechanic. ![]() " \n " end end setClipboardText ( parsed ) end registerAnonymousEventHandler ( "onMouseCopyExample", "onMouseCopyExample" ) ansi2decho ansi2decho(text, default_colour) Converts ANSI colour sequences in text to colour tags that can be processed by the decho() function. symbol end end if l ~= endRow then parsed = parsed. symbol else lastColor = color parsed = parsed. ![]() An example showing implementing a hecho-friendly copy option: addMouseEvent ( "hecho copy", "onMouseCopyExample" ) function rgbToHex ( r, g, b ) local rgb = ( r * 0x10000 ) ( g * 0x100 ) b return string.format ( "#%x", rgb ) end function onMouseCopyExample ( event, menu, window, startCol, startRow, endCol, endRow ) - Check whether there's an actual selection if startCol = endCol and startRow = endRow then return end local parsed = "" local lastColor = nil - Loop through each symbol within the range for l = startRow, endRow do local cStart = l = startRow and startCol or 0 moveCursor ( window, cStart, l ) local cEnd = l = endRow and endCol or # getCurrentLine () - 1 for c = cStart, cEnd do selectSection ( window, c, 1 ) local symbol = getSelection ( window ) or "" - Convert the foreground color to a hex format, suitable for hecho local color = rgbToHex ( getFgColor ( window )) - Don't repeat the color if previous one was the same if color = lastColor then parsed = parsed. Though it is not known who wrote the accompanying sonnets, the theory that Vivaldi wrote them is supported by the fact that each sonnet is broken into three sections, each neatly corresponding to a movement in the concerto. There is some debate as to whether the four concertos were written to accompany four sonnets or vice versa. Vivaldi divided each concerto into three movements (fast–slow–fast), and, likewise, each linked sonnet into three sections.Īll performed by the Wichita State University Chamber Players, an ensemble of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra The music is elsewhere similarly evocative of other natural sounds. For example, in the middle section of "Spring", when the goatherd sleeps, his barking dog can be heard in the viola section. Vivaldi took great pains to relate his music to the texts of the poems, translating the poetic lines themselves directly into the music on the page. The concerti therefore stand as one of the earliest and most detailed examples of what would come to be called program music-in other words, music with a narrative element. Unusual for the period, Vivaldi published the concerti with accompanying sonnets (possibly written by the composer himself) that elucidated what it was in the spirit of each season that his music was intended to evoke. They were a revolution in musical conception: in them Vivaldi represented flowing creeks, singing birds (of different species, each specifically characterized), a shepherd and his barking dog, buzzing flies, storms, drunken dancers, hunting parties from both the hunters' and the prey's point of view, frozen landscapes, and warm winter fires. The inspiration for the concertos is not the countryside around Mantua, as initially supposed, where Vivaldi was living at the time, since according to Karl Heller they could have been written as early as 1716–1717, while Vivaldi was engaged with the court of Mantua only in 1718. Though three of the concerti are wholly original, the first, "Spring", borrows patterns from a sinfonia in the first act of Vivaldi's contemporaneous opera Il Giustino. The Four Seasons is the best known of Vivaldi's works. ![]() ![]() They were published in 1725 in Amsterdam, together with eight additional concerti, as Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione ( The Contest Between Harmony and Invention). These were composed around 1718−1720, when Vivaldi was the court chapel master in Mantua. The Four Seasons ( Italian: Le quattro stagioni) is a group of four violin concertos by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, each of which gives musical expression to a season of the year.
